Beta version of WALL library now available!
Have you ever heard about pancakes which are hard
to make unless you break those eggs?
Well, I am serving you one of those pancakes right now.
WALL (the Wireless Abstraction Library) is taking
OUI's place, meaning that I will not dedicate
more time to OUI in the future. Of course, this site
will still be available together with the OUI sourcecode
for those who need it. It just won't get much of my time.
If you are serious about WAP, you gotta
check it out!
For those who want to hear the whole story, here are the reasons for this move:
- OUI was designed for a world where WML was here to stay.
In 2001 this was changed with the introduction of XHTML MP.
Upgrading OUI to support XHTML MP would be unpractical. Most
developers are better off with an HTML mark-up that also offers
WML support
- OUI was based on the existence of an object model. This turned
out to make integration with other tag-libs tricky (struts, JSTL)
as these tag-libs became more and more of a defacto standard
- OUI was pretty much about a world where there were two
main browsers only. This is less and less true is day.
WALL is based on WURFL and gives you the flexibility you
need to support any device. With OUI, you had to build new
Java rendering strategies. This is too complex for
the random user.
Thank you

OUI - Credits |
Many people have contributed to the OUI project. Here they come.
The holy trinity
- Luca Passani (luca.passani@openwave.com)
Role: Concept owner, Project Manager, Technical Product Manager,
Abstraction Designer, WML expert.
Company:http://www.openwave.com
Luca had the original idea back in 2000. He still thinks the project is cool
(...and useful!)
- Grzegorz Ciepiel (gc@masterscope.com)
Role: Technical Project Manager, System Architect, Developement: Java, .Net
Company: MasterScope Consulting. http://www.masterscope.com
Grzegorz is the brain behind the brilliant architecture that lets one support
new phones simply by throwing new classes in, without modifying the code. Now, isn't that cool?
Greg loves Smalltalk, Component based development, Object Orientation,
Design Patterns and Extreme programming
- Lars Gunder Knudsen (lgk@c-a-c.dk)
Role: Senior Programmer, Architect, Fuzzy Logician
Company: Computer and Chemistry AS
http://www.c-a-c.dk
Not only is Lars an expert in Java, but he masters a wide array
of other technologies that make him a unique resource for
the OUI project.
Contributors
- Andrea Trasatti (trasatti@bware.it)
Role: Programmer for the PHP version
Company: Bware Technologies srl

Quality Assurance and Testing
These people contributed to test and validate OUI.
First the original QA team: Srinivas Bhagavathula (Srini), Pelle Johnsen,
Jaycelle Lao (Thank you, guys. it was fun in Copenhagen), Jonathan Griffin,
Jacky Man and Thorvaldur Flemming Jensen
and Rajendra Yadav.
Other people who contributed to validate the library (many from the good
WMLProgramming mailing list): Marco Toschi,
Gaddo Benedetti
(http://www.mperium.com/),
Noel Leaver, Clive van Hilten, Mario Menti.
Documentation
Roy West, Jaycelle Lao(again), Keith Kluksdahl, Luca Passani and the
Openwave Publication Services group.
Special Mentions
Special thanks go to:
Paul Smethers of Openwave. Paul has been a great supporter
of the project all along, he has taught us about usability and he
has validated the abstractions used in the library.
Ron Mandel of Openwave. Ron has recognized the value of the library
from the first minute and has contributed to the validation
of the library with his knowledge and experience.
Don Schuerholz of Openwave. Don has been a great supporter
and has given great feedback to make sure that everything was done properly.
Roy West of Openwave. Roy led the documentation team when OUI
was still an Openwave product. Roy has been a great supporter along the way.
In addition, we would like to thank the following people from Openwave for their
complete support:
Maureen Scott, Kathy Simpson, Nigel Oakley,Jeff Damir,
Sam Adler, Greg Doherty,
Cindy Dahm, Andrew Wyatt, Rich Wong.
